Welcome to Calvin's
16-10-2016 ....News Update 36
Hello. Calvin here.Isn’t it true that when it comes to education, it affects all of us....
We are constantly learning even when we have passed matric. There is colleges, universities, after hours learning institutions, on the job training, etc. Yet, parents are not fully informed when it comes to the value of INTERNSHIPS.
No doubt, we all agree that internships are a valuable part of the learning process of a young matriculant or college student. BUT the way in which it is presented by colleges and most large companies unfortunately destroys the intended value completely.
1. Most colleges leave it up to the student/lecturer to find internships and simply hand out forms to be signed off which actually opens up an avenue for student dishonesty: many falsify signatures and inflate the number of hours worked.
The solution is to have internships driven by management and not by the student/lecturer. Management must build up relationships with reputable companies and get proper feedback from company management to college management.
This is exactly what I do at CalvinAcademy…I make sure that I am aware of the learning that takes place and that my internship student is not left idle but work on company projects like any of their regular employees. Students are there to learn and not there to remain idle or do “filing” or unproductive work.
2. Unfortunately, most large companies get money (incentives) from government to pay for interns.
This opens up exploitation as the real intent of big business is not to help the intern but to get the internship money from government (taxpayer money).
Now they want students to work for a year at their companies, five days a week and pay them much less that a graduate person (with a qualification) starting at the company for the first time and then they call this an “internship”. In fact, it is using the name “internship” as a cloak for cheap labour.
At my college, I have formed vital and valuable relationships with the owners/managers to make sure that they DO NOT pay my students and that my students DO NOT work more than 2 days a week at the company and that they DO NOT work more than 3 months after which they rotate to a different company.
This enables my students to stay focused on his/her studies and NOT to be exploited. Once my students graduate they will be competent and can be offered a decent paying job at a reputable company with my assistance.
You are welcome to give me your experience and comments about this controversial subject.
I have seen that a Diploma/Degree is not proof of student competence as there is such poor quality training at colleges through bad lecturing, poorly paid staff or continual class disruptions due to the #feesmustfall protests that internships have become a vital tool for learning.
Yet, like the studies, this internship process is also NOT handled properly and exploited by some large companies and parents need to be aware of it.

I want to encourage all the readers of my weekly newsletter that although I am always talking about INCREASING YOUR COMPUTER SKILLS through one-to-one training, I can only give a discount when a student has completed the level 1 course as an incentive not to wait but start level 2 immediately.
The prices of my one-to-one training courses for specialist products like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator & InDesign is already so low.
Please compare prices and let me know if you find a price lower than mine at a reputable training college/company that have been offering Adobe and AutoCAD skills for more than 15 years like I have.
I focus on quality and added value. My reputation and the reliability of my experienced trainers (Nadia and Ivan) that use my training methods to help me is so important to me that it has almost become an obsession.
Now let me say this: computer graphics and AutoCAD training skills for corporate employees is best attained if you get trained ONE-TO-ONE BY AN EXPERT like myself.
Learning the functions and methods on your own just don’t work and it is cause for frustration because you need to know the tricks and tips of an expert like myself and my trainers who know how to teach you to APPLY what you have learned in class - application of the programme in a practical manner with unique example is vital.
My new one-to-one computer training intake dates for the 2nd half of October month is now listed on my various branded websites.
